Council looking to rename “Hack Circle”

http://www.ccc.govt.nz/MediaReleases/2009/June/11144234.asp

Given that young people make up a large portion of those using the “Hack Circle” site (traditionally and hopefully going forward), don’t you feel like having a say in the matter?

We’ll wait to hear who is on the naming panel.

“They believe that the use of the term ‘hack’ lowers the tone of the area and is not in keeping with the image they wish to portray.” – CCC

Do they even know why it was called “The Hack Circle” to start with?

People used to play alot of hacky sac there before it was ripped out…

Maybe they can name it the “Play classical music and get out you young looking people” area?

Apparently it also used to be the place to tie up the old Hackney Carriages back in the day… long before hacky sacks were invented!!

why dont they just call it “Hackney Junction” or something… since the tram to nowhere will be going past there

How about “you stole the coolest part of my childhood now it’s a bunch of stupid seats” circle
Or “drunk girls still trying to look decent” circle
We used to busk there, so sad to see it go….
    Crunk circle?
    lol I’m no help

I had heard the CCC and business asses were keen to name it after a dead banker- typical old boys network eh? I am sure Mr Glasson’s would like it named after him. If it is to be named after a dead person I nominate Stephen Luke who was a fighter for the youth and who got arrested for obstruction when they first ripped the area up.
Frankly though there is nothing there now to name it after- it is only a bland corner now with no character- just the way they like it.
