We are still working on opening another free Youth Health One Stop Shop but this is not going to happen in the short term. In the mean time we are doing our best to offer low cost services.

Self described Star Captain, Dr Hitchcock (not a real doctor and known to his mother as Benet), started Starlifter Radio in September 2009 as an outlet for him and his friends to play Indie Rock, Psych Rock, Glitchy Electro, Nu Disco and various other musical genres. Since then a small community has started to gather around the new school wireless to listen to this unique station.

“The launch of the new website gives the Starlifter community a place to communicate with each other and party like it’s 2999.” says HAL++.
Coinciding with the website launch is the addition of ‘The Delicious Music Show’ to the programme. This is broadcast live every week from Outer Space, located above Cosmic Corner in downtown Christchurch. The show features various DJs playing a selection of Glitch, Techno, Minimal, House and assorted bleeps and beeps.

‘The Delicious Music Show’ is the latest addition to an entertaining and unreal programme.

“It’s better than your iPod on shuffle!” says one member of the Starlifter Radio community, and that is backed up by Hal++.

“There is much thought put into the playlists, you’re not gonna get a loud rock song followed by ambient electronica (unless it really works in a clever kind of way).”

“We don’t just play music either.” says Dr Hitchcock.

“We actually have radio presenters sharing their personal insights and musical knowledge from time to time. They talk significantly less smack than some on commercial radio and when they do speak they make it worth listening to. Every week live shows are broadcast from various locations around Christchurch. We also play various features, podcasts and DJ mixes, choice!”

The MASSIVE Winter Soulstices have become something of a legend in the South Island (and beyond) – held outdoors, they’re like the brass monkey of dance events. At Soulstice 2010, dancers will be treated to a close-up view of the majestic Southern Alps to the West, with the whole of the Waimakariri River Gorge laid out to the East – the perfect place to see the sunrise.

Now fifteen years old, MASSIVE is like a revolving game of musical chairs, with enough members in the seats at any given time to make sure that the parties always deliver. With over six events a year, each MASSIVE party is organised by different teams of members to ensure they all have their own special flavour. For Soulstice 2010 the challenge has been picked up by the beautiful MASSIVE wahine (the wool-wrapped ladies who greet you at the gate), who have put together an incredible line up to tempt you off the couch and into the great outdoors.

In the MASSIVE Zone the night kicks off with those mavericks of funk guitar, A Hori Buzz; with Joint Forces dubstepping it up in the middle of the night. At dawn, Million Buxx will be dropping some ‘neo post rave gangsta frunk’, and in-between you’ll be treated to a smorgasbord of dance styles – and belly dancers!

In the Renegade Zone some of the hottest local DJ’s will be steaming up MASSIVE’s iconic green tent (last seen at Chartfest) with dub, techno and jungle. The Lytellton Lounge Circus Tent will be the place for hot food and drinks, and the Tribal Fire Zone will provide the perfect spot to warm up and chill out.

As always, bring everything you might need for a big night out with Mother Nature, including warm clothes, food, a torch, and your best party face. How long ago did you start making music and what got you into it?

It’s a long story really, as is everyone’s, but basically I had always been a hip hop girl, from intermediate age right through my teens. In about 2000 I started going to raves and listening to a lot of DNB. I DJ’d my own radio show in Christchurch for a few years and decided to dabble in MCing. I really enjoyed it, and was pretty good, probably from listening to rap for all those years beforehand. I used to sing as well, so around the time I started MCing drum n bass I began recording vocal samples for my producer friends to muck round with.  It sort of progressed from there. In around 2003-2004 I was getting sick of the whole DNB thing and something significant happened in my life that made me want to write a song, so I did. I made the beat and I sampled my own voice for the hook, it was my first rap song and it sort of snowballed from there.

You’ve done a bit of work with well known producer P-Money, can you tell us a bit about that and how you hooked up?

Ahh, well, after I made that first song I just mentioned, I chucked it up on the net for people to check out. I didn’t know anyone in the NZ hip hop scene at the time and was basically looking for some feedback on the stuff I had done. It turned out, Askew was rapping in a crew called Tombraiderz and he commented on the song, in a really good constructive way, which was what I was looking for. After that he invited me to drop 8 bars on a Disruptiv Posse cut a few of the guys were working on at the time. So I dropped 8 bars for that.  A wee while later he hit me up and told me P-Money had heard my verse and wanted to get in touch with me, I was pretty gob smacked and nervous n shit as you would be. He arranged to meet up a few days later n have a chat, we jumped in the studio and laid a few things down, and that’s pretty much how the connection was made. After that, Askew invited me to join Tombraiderz, which I did. I then moved to Auckland and continued to work with P-Money whilst living up there. We recorded the joint that was on his last album “Unreleased joints & Remixes” around that time. Ever since I’ve kept in contact n sent through what I’ve been working on at that point in time, & P’s sent me through beats. I just got a fresh batch of P-Money beats not too long ago actually, so who knows what u might hear in the near future

Do you find it hard being a female artist in a male dominated industry?

Nah not really, I’m better than 90% of the dudes rapping out there nowadays anyways. I do find that my biggest haters are dudes though.. Maybe its a jealousy thing? Who knows? I guess the way I’ve always looked at it is; If u got the skills to pay the bills, then you got no need to worry about the debt collectors being on your ass, nahmean? Haha.

Has having a kid impacted on your music and in what way?

Yeah it’s changed my music hard out. Having a kid changes you as a person in so many ways so, if my music had of stayed the same, I would be a bit worried haha. I guess it’s just a matter of different life experiences. When you have a kid it pretty much turns your world 360 degrees. I’ve definitely gotten better since I had my son. How n what exactly caused me to get better, I don’t really know. For me, writing is a good way to release the mixture of stress & worry, hardship and life’s ups n downs in general. It’s pretty hard to try n juggle family life & music but since it is so hard I feel like I’ve achieved so much when I actually do get shit done. As hard as it is, I love it and I wouldn’t change anything.

You’ve just released a new EP ‘The Epiphany’, how does it differ from your previous releases?

It was my first Solo “release” if you can even call it that. I basically wanted to kick off the year with some shit to set a personal bar for myself, with the aim to continue on the year the way I started it. The EP is only available online, for free download. All the tracks were recorded at home and mixed by me, so if anything, it will differ from any subsequent releases coz everything from here on in will be a million times better.

What advice would you give to up and coming local artists trying to make it in New Zealand’s Hip Hop scene?

Don’t do it unless your heart is really in it. Pay your dues. Stay true to yourself.

What should we be expecting from you in the near future?

There’s a next project is underway, you can expect it to be better than anything you’ve ever heard from me, and 99.9% of the other rappers u ever heard. Haha nah, just expect to see the bar continued to be raised, and more hot shit on that real life tip.

Mixtape Review

This week I’ll be reviewing Grips & Tonic’s (JJ Peters and Louie Knuxx) mixtape ‘Songs To Fuck Your Hand To’, which you can download for FREE on the Grips & Tonic Myspace – www.myspace.com/gripsntonic

This mixtape brings a refreshing taste in contrast with a lot of music coming out now and steers in a different direction from some of the local artists I’ve been checking out recently; in short they’ve succeeded in bringing commercially viable music without sounding like bubblegum candy rappers.

JJ Peters comes with a strong delivery that provides a nice amount of energy to the tracks while Louie Knuxx brings a more chilled style that creates the perfect contrast of swagger and hype. The more you listen to this mixtape the more you realize how much Grips & Tonic’s rugged realness relate to the lives of most of us hip hop heads, with tracks like “wake up fucked up” and “girls”.

The gem on this mixtape for me is the remix of Maino’s song ‘Tiger Woods’, this track got me laughing pretty f***ing hard.
